Meet Your New Partner

Vintage film detectives didn't need buddies. In "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), Humphrey Bogart's partner is killed early, and Mr. Bogart's Sam Spade coolly has Miles Archer's name scraped off the window. But "48 Hrs." (1982) and "Lethal Weapon" (1987) changed the equation: Two cops are better than one, preferably if they have volatile chemistry.

And this summer is no different. Movie cops will pair up, reluctantly at first, trade insults and ultimately realize they can't count on anyone but each other. Their relationship usually ends up being more compelling than their pursuit of the bad boys.
